India-Sri Lanka relations date back to pre-historic times: International Conference Held at Utkal University

Bhubaneswar (Ama Aitiha) Archaeological research indicates similarities between the Stone Age remains found on the coasts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, suggesting a historical connection between the two regions. This was stated by Prof. Ven. Uditha Upantha, a professor at the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka, during a two-day international seminar on “Various Dimensions and New Perspectives of Archaeological Research” organized by the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar.

Prof. Uditha Upantha emphasized the historical ties between India and Sri Lanka, highlighting the significance of archaeological findings. Prof. Yajneshwar Dandapat, Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University, inaugurated the seminar, while Prof. Kishor Kumar Basa delivered the keynote address, discussing Odisha’s historical culture and maritime trade. Prof. Susmit Prasad Pani was the honored guest.

The seminar included presentations by researchers from various Indian states and Sri Lanka, with discussions on archaeological research and historical connections between the two countries. A book titled “History, Culture and Archaeology of North Odisha” was also released during the event.

On the concluding day, Prof. Subrat Acharya delivered a lecture on the ancient relations between India and Sri Lanka, supported by archaeological and literary evidence. Prof. Sudhir Kumar from Manipur was the honored guest. The event featured an exhibition of archaeological and historical images and research papers
