Abstract – Harekrushna Mahatab, a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress, played a decisive part in India’s struggle for independence and the political, artificial, and artistic metamorphosis of Odisha. Serving as Chief Minister (1946 – 1950; 1956 – 1961), Mahatab popularly known as Utkal Keshari was deeply inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and combined political vision with social reform. His multifaceted benefactions, including the admixture of kingly countries, the establishment of Bhubaneswar as the state capital, largescale structure similar as the Hirakud Dam, and creation of literature and journalism, deposited him as the foremost mastermind of ultramodern Odisha. His influence extended beyond India, engaging with world leaders and representing Odisha on global platforms. Utkal Keshari Harekrushna Mahatab, a protean, towering personality of the contemporary period, the mastermind of ultramodern Utkal and colonist of a new dawn of Odisha, was largely inspired by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Dr. Mahatab’s name will be ever inscribed in golden letters in the annals of Odisha Politics for his benefactions towards the development of Odia literature and culture. He who rises over all odds, time and again, to take the state of Odisha through the transition of the state of Odisha post-independence period is undisputable. His donation to Modern Odisha from social, industrial, profitable, erudite, and political spheres is unequaled. He’s truly the first Odia to be extensively honored on a National and International forum. The paper examines key phases of modernization, including the impact of industrialization, urbanization, technological advancements, and policy interventions, as well as the shifting social structures and cultural identities within the state. Furthermore, it critically evaluates the effects of economic reforms, globalization, and demographic changes on the region’s development patterns. By integrating historical analysis with contemporary socio-economic trends, this article seeks to provide insights into the ways Odisha has adapted to modern challenges while preserving its traditional identity. This examination offers a comprehensive understanding of how social, economic, and political factors have shaped the modern development trajectory of Odisha in the context of its rich history and diverse heritage. Traditional folk media have been in existence for a long time and have been used as a medium of communication, particularly in the remote areas where modern media of communication is non-available. ABSTRACT
The Khirachora Gopinath Temple of Remuna, Balasore, represents a unique confluence of religious devotion, historical tradition, and architectural excellence in medieval Odisha. This paper explores how stone—both as a material and metaphor—plays a central role in shaping the temple’s narrative identity. The temple’s origin is associated with King Langula Narasingha Deba of the 13th century and enriched by legends linking the idol to Lord Rama and Maa Sita, highlighting its spiritual significance. The temple’s name, “Khirachora” (the stealer of milk and rice pudding), reflects the personal relationship between the deity and devotees, symbolizing divine compassion and playfulness. Architecturally, the temple exemplifies the rekha deul style with refined stone masonry, intricate carvings, and Vaishnavite iconography. Archaeological perspectives underscore its historical importance and preservation challenges posed by environmental factors, while also noting its relative immunity from invasions. The study emphasizes the temple’s role as a custodian of Odisha’s cultural heritage and calls for sustained conservation and research efforts to safeguard its legacy.
